What types of trucking jobs are available in the southeast?
For most states in this region, agriculture is the main industry. Truck drivers are needed to export food—fruits, vegetables, cattle, and poultry—out of the region. Both long-haul and short-haul drivers, on dedicated and irregular routes are needed to do this.
I am moving to the area from across the country. Is my CDL valid?
In most cases you will be required pass the state exam, show proof that you have already passed a Department of Transportation physical, and pay a small fee to become a licensed truck driver in the state you now reside. Upon completion of these requirements, your CDL will still be valid and you will be able to get a job as a truck driver in this region.
What are some of the largest cities in this region?
The largest cities in the southeast United States include Miami, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Memphis, Tennessee.
I’ve applied for several trucking jobs, but no one will offer me a position. Why?
There could be several reasons. If you have been convicted of a felony, DUI, or a violent crime, then you are less likely to find the job that you want. Other items that may exclude you from a position at most companies include: failing a drug screen within the last 10 years, a history of vehicle accidents or moving violations.
If you haven’t been driving for over a year, you should let the company you are applying with know why that is the case.
What age do I have to be to drive a truck in this region?
In most cases, the minimum age to obtain a CDL is 21. The age at which you can start working for a particular company is often determined by the company itself. For insurance reasons, some companies will not hire drivers until they are 25 years old.
What is the best way to make money as a truck driver?
The more experience you have behind the wheel, the more money you can make. You just need to keep driving safely so you can log more miles as a safe driver and work towards earning more money.
Another option you may want to explore is becoming an independent operator; they are typically paid more than company truck drivers. Many truck driving companies provide lease programs that allow drivers to become owner operators. If this is something you are interested in, we can match you with the best trucking companies that provide such programs to help you get started as an independent operator.
